Canoeing in the San Romedio Canyon
Try this new outdoor proposal on Lake Santa Giustina with Ursus Adventures.
An easy guided canoe excursion within everyone's reach, which teaches the rudiments of paddling but also fascinates with stories about this magnificent canyon, full of history and nature.
The canyon has been carved out over the millennia by the Rio S.Romedio, where the famous Sanctuary of the same name is located. We of Ursus Adventures are particularly attached to it because the legend linked to San Romedio tells that the saint managed to tame a bear he met in the woods during his pilgrimage. And for us, the bear is a magical animal of unquestionable charm.
On the last stretch of the Rio San Romedio canyon, the one we will ascend in a canoe, near the Plaze locality from where we will depart,
The last section of the canyon travelled by the San Romedio river before it flows into Lake Santa Giustina, and which can be reached by canoe from the lake itself, is formed by red flake walls. The red flake is a sedimentary rock formed about 60 million years ago, and is one of the most recent rock formations in the area; it is very friable and subject to erosion.
The San Romedio stream flows through the valley of the same name, which for long stretches takes on the conformation of a canyon, composed mainly of dolomite rock.
There are two ancient bridges that are submerged by the waters of the lake for most of the year, but often emerge in the spring season: the Regiai bridge and the Mula bridge.
Situated at a rather high altitude, the Regiai bridge emerges every year in the spring months: it is a bridge from the Austro-Hungarian period built in the second half of the 19th century and is preserved almost intact. The bridge is located along the ancient Regiai road, an important communication route that ran along the left bank of the Noce torrent and led from Revò to Dermulo.
In the stretch further downstream in the canyon of the San Romedio stream is the ancient Mula bridge, which, being at a low elevation, rarely emerges. It is a masonry bridge that, although suffering from damage caused by time and the waters of the lake, still retains its characteristic arched shape. Legend has it that the Baron of Cles one day found himself fleeing from a crowd of peasants from Sanzeno on the back of a mule, and that once they reached the Rio San Romedio stream, the mule made a leap towards the Dermulo shore that saved the Baron.
At the base of the Doss della Colombara, which lies in the middle of the lake in front of the dam and which is itself entirely submerged during the summer, there is instead the High Bridge ('pònt Àut'), which rarely emerges and which connected the two banks of the Noce; before the construction of the iron bridge in 1888, the High Bridge was the only crossing point over the Noce in this area of the valley.
A guided canoe excursion inside this easy canyon will give you two hours of pleasant admiration of the nature of this magnificent place, while enjoying the history that this place still has to tell.
