Historical trekking at Passo Tonale

The Tonale Pass was the scene of one of mankind's greatest tragedies: World War I, also known as the 'White War'.

On one side were the troops of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (Trentino was part of it until 1918) and on the other the troops of the Kingdom of Italy. These two sides fought over peaks and glaciers at high altitudes, amidst the snows of the Adamello and Ortles Cevedale ranges.

The battles that took place in Val di Sole were particularly bloody and were characterised above all by the extreme conditions in which they were fought, with efforts on both sides that could be described as inhuman.

The conflict left indelible traces, from trenches and fortifications that changed the landscape forever.

Thetrekking experience we propose is to relive the Great War more than 100 years later, retracing military routes and observing what has remained in the Val di Sole territory.

Many forts, second-line barracks, trenches, and holes in the ground made by mortars can still be seen here.

In a one-day trek we will start from the Tonale Pass and then reach Mount Tonale Orientale. From here we will descend to the "Dead City" where we will still be able to see the Austrian fortifications that in a tragic December of 1916 were swept away by a huge avalanche causing dozens of deaths among the Austro-Hungarians. From here we will descend into the Strino valley and then climb up to Fort Zaccarana, an imposing and dominant fortification. From here we will descend again to Fort Mero, see the military airfield and return to Passo del Tonale.

A specialday of historical trekking: the entire experience will be carried out by a guide who is a commander of the alpine troops.

An ideal historical trek for schools, groups or even families who want culture as well as sport.

A day where we will set off early, eat out and enjoy the beauty of Tonale.
